It sounds great on any music that needs to be more in-your-face, like Rock, Hip Hop, & EDM. This is a modified emulation of the legendary SSL Bus Compressor. The first, and my personal favorite, is the FG-Grey plugin. It has an emulation of three very popular compressors that mixing and mastering engineers have used for decades. This was one of the first Slate Digital Plugins that I bought. It has seven different plates with different sonic characteristics. It gives the vocals a smoothness to them without sounding like they’re in a particular space. I’m a big fan of plate reverbs, particularly across a vocal track. This is a 3rd party plugin that’s made by LiquidSonics. Just try it and you’ll fall in love with it, too. It has a really smooth sound to it, that I really love depending upon the song. It sounds wonderfully rich across a vocal track. It’s an tube-based opto compressor with a unique release time that’s dependent upon the audio that’s going through it. The FG-2A is an emulation of the old Teletronix LA-2A. He really should get the bulk of the credit for the plugins I’m mentioning here. This plugin is derived from the Eiosis Air EQ Premium, which was designed by Fabrice Gabriel, on of the co-founders of Slate Digital. It’s really a great plugin to experiment with. Anything that needs added warmth, the RCA emulation is perfect for that. It has 6 different console emulations, an SSL E Series, an SSL G Series, an API, a Neve 8048, a Trident, and vintage RCA tube console. If I’m gating a Kick Drum, I’ll add in the Detection Filters and it works great as well if you need to. I can drop it as the first plugin on a track, and I’ll almost always only need to adjust the Detect Threshold, and that’s all I need to do. To borrow an overused phrase, “It Just Works”. This is the best gate for cleaning up drums that I have ever used. Some of these plugins are standalone, and some are accessed through their Virtual Mix Rack. Those are the plugins that I use on every single session. This list isn’t in any particular order, with the exception of the last two. Get a clean surgical EQ (Fabfilter Pro 2), an analog eq, and so forth. Your stock plugins honestly can do most of the work for you, and if you really want some third party plugins then get a few dedicated ones. This is Gear Acquisition Syndrome at it's finest ( I know that Steven Slate will go blue in the face saying that it's better economically if you subscribe instead of spend thousands of dollars on plugins.įirst of all, you shouldn't need to spend thousands of dollars on plugins. It really is a debate between renting vs owning your plugins. In this video I explain why I don't subscribe to the subscription model of the slate everything bundle. Steven Slate's Everything Bundle is definitely the pioneer of this trend.
Subscription services of Plugins is a hot topic at the moment.
